Managing our Rates is going to be the major challenge for the next council. There are even calls for someone outside of our district to decide what that level of Rates should be - it's called Rate Capping. Do we really want some faceless bureaucrat in Wellington deciding if Kāpiti residents deserve a library, or to maintain our parks? I have a very clear view that Rates need to be set in the community and those that spend them have a duty to be accountable for them. If elected I would want to see our rates spent to the things that our community values, obviously the essentials, but also lest wisely invest in things that make our community grow and remain vibrant.
